Answer the questions (1-6). Use a maximum of 4 words. Write your answers in the boxes. The first one (0) is an example. The internet is one of the world s most important inventions because it changed the way to communicate all over the world. It appeared in the early 1970s and is basically an extremely large network of computers. In 1989, the British scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the web. He was working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), in Switzerland, and he was very disappointed by the fact that all the scientists had different types of computers that couldn t communicate to each other. Berners-Lee had an idea for an information system that every computer could read: the web. In 1991, the world s first website was built at CERN. WWW means World Wide Web. It s a way of sharing information through webpages, using a kind of computer language called HTTP. That s why URLs (web addresses) often start with http://www. Today, Berners-Lee s idea is part of people s everyday reality. More than half the world s population is connected to the rest of the world via the internet. The other half lives in the least developed countries, for example in Asia and Africa. The United Nations says that universal internet access will be possible very soon, with the help of low cost mobile phone services which offer internet connection in their tariffs. It will be the end of the Digital Divide : the inequality between countries of the world in their access or use of communication technologies. In the early 1970s. 0. When did the internet appear? 1.
